A Brief History

Beginning as part of the Richfield Township in the 1850’s, Edina was home to immigrated farmers, sitting directly southwest of Minneapolis. It wasn’t until 1888 the area residents came together to break away and establish their own city, which after much debate, was named Edina.  In 1954, Edina broke ground for the first ever indoor shopping mall in the U.S. The opening of Southdale Center brought in 40,000 visitors and still thrives today. Across from Southdale is the beautiful Galleria mall. Stores such as Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, and pottery barn make up these shops of distinction. Edina also shares a popular business neighborhood with Minneapolis. 50th & France features over 175 fine boutiques, retailers, and restaurants to wine and dine. Today, the city houses approximately 49,000 residents and is known to be one of the most affluent addresses in the Twin Cities.
