A Brief History

Excelsior was founded in the 1850’s as a vacation and resort city and thrived economically on its local restaurants, hotels, and merchants. The Excelsior Amusement Park was in existence from 1925-1973. The Minnehaha Steamboat was originally in operation in 1906, it shuttled vacationers around Lake Minnetonka until it sank in 1926. The boat was raised in 1980, restored in the 1990’s and still provides rides around Lake Minnetonka. The Port of Excelsior is a vibrant part of the town, offering private charters. Many charters are available to host private parties, events, weddings, etc. Today, Excelsior has the feel of old and eclectic businesses as well as new shops, restaurants, and other attractions. The town also hosts events such as “Apple Days”, “Crazy Days”, and a farmer’s market.
