A Brief History

Known as “The Beach” by its residents, the city opened for settlement in 1872. In 1870, the Hotel Lafayette opened for James J. Hill and was the first summer resort on Lake Minnetonka. In 1897, the hotel was destroyed in a fire, and 2 years later the Minnetonka Club was built on site; after another fire in 1924, the club was resurrected and is currently named the Lafayette Club. As one of the smallest cities in the state of Minnesota, Minnetonka Beach houses less than 550 residents and encompasses approximately .48 miles of water and land.
