A Brief History

Derived from the Dakota Indian word mni tanka, meaning “great water”, Minnetonka was first settle by Dakotah and Ojibway Indians. 1822 was the first recorded exploration of European settlers when the group traveled along the (now) Minnehaha Creek to the lake. Originally Minnetonka was 36 square miles but shrunk in size up until 1956, as other cities formed within Minnetonka’s border. Today, the city is 28 square miles of land and water. It houses over 51,000 residents. Minnetonka is home to the country’s largest privately¬†held company, Cargill, and United Healthcare, Minnesota’s largest publicly owned company. Minnetonka provides its residents with over 42 public parks, 40+ miles of trails, and access to Lake Minnetonka’s Grays Bay.
