A Brief History

In 1856, horticulturist, Peter Gideon, acquired 160 acres of land in between Lake Minnetonka’s upper and lower lakes. He created an apple that could endure the Minnesota climate. Soon thereafter, Lake Park Hotel and high luxury cottages were built and Tonka Bay was soon a destination for vacationers, boat, and lake lovers. In the early 1900’s, the now, Tonka Bay Marina, was constructed. Today, the marina is Lake Minnetonka’s largest full-service marina. Although a mere one square mile, Tonka Bay has 5 beaches and parks.
